On 18 Aug 2001 Hardy sent us Martin Green's 16 Aug 2001 posting
regarding the "Shakeshafte" theory, in which Martin said, "Although, as
Dr. Velz writes, Honigmann may deserve 'major credit in the chronology
of the Shakeshafte affair', he was not the first to argue for a
Shakeshafte/Shakespeare connection" etc.

I'm a bit lost because I don't think I received Dr. Velz's posting if it
was recently posted. I'm interested in what he or she said, as my
dissertation (PhD thesis) examines the Lancastiran/Shakeshafte theory. I
visited the SHAKSPER website several times, but it seemed down. Maybe
Hardy was updating it?

Dr. Velz is right in that Honigmann's work deserves credit, and Martin
is also right in that Honigmann was not the first to point out the
(controversial) Shakeshafte/Shakespeare identification. BUT Chambers'
first "reference" to the Shakeshafte in Houghton's will (not
"identification" with Shakespeare) appeared in his 1923 Elizabethan
Stage, vol. 1, p. 280, not in his 1930 William Shakespeare: A Study of
Facts and Problems.

One of the latest essays on the theory is Dr. Robert Bearman's
"Shakespeare: A Warwickshire Lad -- or Partly a Lancashire One?", which,
he said, when I heard from him a couple of weeks ago, he had more or
less written.

Best wishes,
Takashi Kozuka

Internet connection late Monday through yesterday. Thus, the Webpage was
not accessible. I now have commercial DSL at home and will by
mid-October move the SHAKPSER server there, reducing this sort of
problem. -Hardy]
