Forgive me if I've missed a posting on this subject, as I was away for
several months, but I wondered if anyone has answered the question of
why the painting was in the family's possession? I know they are
descendants of the painter, but is it common for a painter to keep the
portrait of his sitter? But then I suppose the implication is WS did not
commission it, that JS did it on spec and either couldn't or wouldn't
sell it to his subject?
Any thoughts on this?
