Chris,

I really hope someone writes in and says I'm wrong about this.

The Peter Hall *MV* that featured Dustin Hoffman as Shylock was not
taped for broadcast or released commercially. Parts of the play were on
a *South Bank Show* about the production, which I have not seen, and I
do not believe has been broadcast in the U.S. I wrote Bravo back when
they broadcast the *SBS* suggesting they air it. They politely thanked
me, but didn't express much enthusiasm, so I doubt they ever did pick it
up.

An interesting anecdote: Hoffman got a bee in his bonnet, strange place
to keep it, to play Hamlet, and so contacted Hall to direct him. Hall
said, "Waitaminute, Dusty. You're kinda old for the Hamster, whozabout
we come up with plan B?" Or words to that effect.

If anyone know how I can get a copy of that South Bank Show, please
contact me off list.

All the best,
Mike Jensen

The Hoffman MoV may have been videotaped for the Lincoln Center Library
archives in NYC (most Broadway productions are). If so, it could be
viewed there free of charge. It is not commercially available.
