Subject: Scotland, PA

I saw Scotland, PA yesterday hand had a few questions for those who
have seen it.

1. Any idea why this got an R rating? I thought that there was little
violence shown and there's basically no sex except for kissing and
hugging (with the actors fully clothed). it seemed to me well within
pg-13 territory. I took my 12 year old daughter (the R rated Gladiator
is her favorite film) and she felt the same way.)

2. The film is not doing well (it is playing here in L.A) in only one
theater in the entire area. Yet is being heavily promoted, with ads in
today's NY Times, for example. There were three pieces about it he NY
Times. Does the director have connections or a huge budget?

Finally, not a question but a comment. I agree with largely negative
reviewers in the L.A. Times and NY Times about the film. It is a very
loose adaptation of the play and seems to go out of its way not to cite
the text almost not at all (there is a sign for a forest called "Birnam
Woods" and "fair" and "foul" are said by the wierd sisters in the
opening). The satire on the 70s did not make sense to me either, nor
did making Donaldbain a gay teenager. Some of the film was reasonably
funny, but not much.

Best,
Richard
