I thought it apt that a failed politician like Mo Molam should laud
Winston Churchill as the saviour of mankind. Her piece tonight on the
BBC's "Great Britons" was a dreadful piece of history that I hope no
impressionable children witnessed. Churchill was the greatest failed
politician of all time with little to his credit except that of a
thumping great British romantic. Molam's idea that the people of the
United Kingdom decided to fight Hitler to the death because of
Churchill's pseudo-Shakespearean oratory is absurd to the point of
insult. It is a myth perpetuated by tiny minded amateur historians who
firmly believe that countries can be kidnapped by mad, lone individuals
bent on world dominance. Professional soldiery won the bloody mess that
was World War II and would have done so in spite of the presence of bad
poets posing as military strategists. Isn't it always Shakespeare who
is accused of bad history? Miss Molam tonight proved that that
tradition lives on but only in terms of gross inaccuracy. "Richard the
Third", for instance, is bad history but tells us an eternal truth about
human evil and greed for power. Molam's buffoonish argument for
Churchill told us nothing except that politicians are shallow and
grasping. Pretty much as Shakespeare reported.
