The reason why travel was done by boats on canals is that this was a
cheap fast way of travel for people and also for goods and merchandise.
Bad roads, robbers and the limitation of the size of the load that a
horse could drag by wagon are all important factors. It was also
necessary to have post horses that would need to be readily available
along the road. One might think that it was always easiest to travel at
sea by the most direct route but that is not the case. Travel from
Northeastern Sicily to Northwestern Sicily was done by ship not across
the Northern shoreline but in a clockwise direction around the whole
island. This was because of the winds and the tides. I have a summer
home in Brewster on Cape Cod. Before the railroads came and the
combustion engine found its way into autos and trucks the major way for
passage from Boston to this part of the Cape was by packet boat. The
captains and owners of these boats were always the wealthiest people in
Town. Another place where the Bard is thought to be in error occurs in
THE WINTER'S TALE Vii 95 where Paulina is said to have a statue of
Hermione -"newly performed by that rare Italian master, Julio Romano."
It was long argued that Julio Romano was a painter and not a sculptor
and thus Shakespeare got his facts wrong. However Julio Romano has now
been proven to be both a painter and a sculptor and perhaps most
importantly used the trompe d'oeil method to give the effect of reality
to his work.

Best,
