Two points, in passing, though I reluctantly concur with your broad
strokes: the overacting is to compensate for the solely audible nature
of the performance, and hence as necessary as often irritating- and the
one advantage to that limitation is that actors who would never be cast
due to their "looks" may very well have great voices.  Let's face it, on
a desert isle or a long car journey to a Shakespeare Festival, they are
serviceable.
