To amplify my post just a bit, yes, there are DVD players that will
convert PAL to NTSC for showing on North American TVs. However, many do
not do so correctly resulting in a squashed picture. Check the reviews
on the DVD player you're considering to make sure it can do the
conversion correctly. You will lose some resolution converting to NTSC
as PAL is a higher resolution than NTSC. The best solution for PAL DVDs
is still a multiregion DVD player outputting a PAL signal to a PAL
compatible device. I suggest a front projection TV that can display
NTSC or PAL. They've come down to under $1,200 US, well below most rear
projection and Plasma TVs and project an awesome picture on your wall or
a screen. DVDs of Shakespeare's plays displayed in a 100" picture on
your wall are stunning. And many, such as Olivier's Richard III, have
only been released in PAL format. Opera's and ballets are suburb this
way too, and again, some of the best are only released in Europe.
