Subject: Othello Retold

Isabel Wolff's latest novel 'Out of the Blue' was inspired by WS's
'Othello'.

In an interview Wolff said: 'In that play, Othello is a heroic black
general whose white 'friend' Iago, plants the seeds of suspicion about
Othello's wife, Desdemona...What I've done is to invert this so that in
'Out of the Blue' the Othello character, Faith, is white, and the
brilliant Machiavel, Lily - whose surname is Jago, echoes Iago - is
black, because it is Iago who is by far the more powerful and
interesting character, and Lily is far more interesting and powerful
than Faith.
