Subject: Re: Shakespeare in Georgia (Caucasus)
Boris Pasternak translated the works of Shakespeare into Georgian, and,
I am told, the translations are very beautiful. In addition, I've read
his translation of King Lear into Russian, he caught the language and
sense brilliantly. Not that I know brilliance in English or Russian...
But I learned things from the Russian that helped my understanding of
the English. For instance, he talks VERY earthily and heartily to his
daughters at the beginning, and I don't think he was only trying to make
Lear sound like a man of the people for political reasons. And his
Edgar is as powerful and poignant in Russian as in English.
