               THE JEW OF MALTA

Another classic returns to the Rose

The Jew of Malta, one of Christopher Marlowe's most popular plays, will
be performed on the Rose Theatre site by The Phoenix Company from
Tuesday 4th November until Saturday 8th November at 7.30pm with a
matinee at 4.30pm on Sunday 9th November.

This special abridged version the play most frequently produced on the
Elizabethan stage is a special event in order to pilot a full scale
production by the Phoenix Company early next year. Following the
performance the audience will be invited to stay on for an informal
discussion with the cast, asking questions, sharing responses and
enjoying a complimentary glass of wine.

The Phoenix is a company of actors formed mostly by members of the
experimental Winter Playing Seasons at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
dedicated to exploring the style of acting associated with the great
dramas of the English Renaissance. The performances are played in the
ordinary light, giving equal visibility to both actor and audience and
the arena type seating will maximise involvement, vitality and immediacy
of contact.

This will be yet another new departure for events at the Rose. Another
important event paying tribute to Christopher Marlowe by bringing this
riotous black comedy back to its original venue after four hundred
