Gary Taylor's _Castration, an Abbreviated History of Masculinity_ offers
a rich reading of castration from antiquity on.
Perhaps the eunuch bit is Viola's way of covering for her higher vocal
range?

There are different types of eunuchs. Some have only the testicles
removed, some only the penis, and some both. If Viola presented herself
as one of the latter, she would have a ready explanation for the absence
of her virile member.
