Subject: 14.1889 Bernardo or Barnardo
Comment: RE: SHK 14.1889 Bernardo or Barnardo
Both Folio and Q2 use Barnardo, and for speech prefixes Bar. Two minor
exceptions--for the stage direction in Act I, scene 2, Folio has "Enter
Horatio, Barnard [no o], and Marcellus"; Q2 has "Enter Horatio,
Marcellus, and Bernardo." Harold Jenkins' edition claims that the "bad
quarto" of 1603 uses both Barnardo and Bernardo, although I find only
Bernardo in Albert B. Weiner's edition of that quarto. Many editors seem
to like Bernardo, perhaps because it's a more familiar form.
Jenkins notes (the irrelevance of) the murderers of Giuliano de Medici
in 1478--Francesco de Pazzi and Bernardo Bandini--i.e, Crazy Frank and
Bernie the Bandit.
