Subject: The Italian Job

Having been on holiday, I return to a barrage of intolerance, lies,
bigotry, prejudice, disparaging invective, mistrust, unwarranted
extrapolation and ignorance. Contrary to what some readers may think, I
do not refer to any current thread on SHAKSPER or the spat between HMG
and Aunty Beeb but to a four hour fest of Shakespeare TV documentaries
all shown last night. Wood, Bogdanov and Rubbo conduct three different
searches to the mystery that is Shakespeare. Probing public and
luminaries alike they expose the dark uncertainties that are
depressingly and commonly foisted upon the unwary as incontrovertible
fact. Space and time permit only a fraction of the delights presented -
often in a welter of huffing, puffing, sneering, scowling, eyebrow
raising and jaw dropping:

Shakespeare couldn't have written the plays attributed to him because he
has an insensitive face. Pleasure in Shakespeare is wrecked by school
experiences where the teaching is rotten. Shakespeare hadn't the
education to enable him to write the plays. The plays are biographical.
His dad was a catholic. His wife was ugly. He was stingy. It's a
conspiracy! His plays were not published. Jonson was in on it!! Marlowe
was up to it!!! Elizabeth was at it!!!! Walsingham has a lot to answer

The archives of Padua and Mantua contain the answers it turns out. And
someone needs to go and research 'em it seems.

I offer my services and appeal to your generosity.

A river search, eh?
