Subject: King of Shadows

I am currently teaching the delightful novel, King of Shadows.

In it, Nat Field, who goes back through time to act in A Midsummer
Night's Dream in 1599, is painted with body paint for his role of the
Puck, as is Shakespeare who plays Oberon.

My query is whether there is any evidence that this sort of thing
happened. Could a character have been decorated with paint for his stage
performance?
