This is not a first resort, but I find it to be essential in
understanding the topic (who *were* they marketing to?) and others
probably won't mention it, so I will: Anne Jennalie Cook's The
Privileged Playgoers of Shakespeare's London, 1576-1642. It's packed
with primary-source information, cogent interpretation, and strongly
supported conclusions. It is also, blessedly, an almost completely
"theory"-free zone.
Here's to highly motivated undergraduates.
