If anyone is feeling really apocalyptic, you might be interested in some
recent academic fora concerning peak oil production (see website: From
The Wilderness), some of which put the end of the world's oil and gas
supplies at about 2050. It will be hard to retrieve even HTML docs from
a computer at that point; even if they start working on a solar powered
model (w/ hand crank printer), they won't be able to manufacture any
without lubricated assembly lines (not to mention toner). More urgently,
as production declines over the coming decades, prices will rise
precipitously. The prospect of printing out several gigabytes of text
today is nowhere as daunting as the idea of getting one's Bildungsroman
off a CD when oil is $100 a barrel. While I'm busy writing a
dissertation by Visual Basic and MySQL, I see this as possibly a much
shorter term technology than most people seem to think.

Colleagues of mine at NUS who have used Endnote say that it takes some
time to get used to, but is extremely useful once you have the hang of it.

For what it's worth ...
