Subject: Merry Wives of Windsor and Falstaff

The Island Shakespeare Festival at Anna Maria, Florida is presenting The
Merry Wives of Windsor this summer. The director has expressed the
desire that Falstaff be, of course, grossly obese. Since we have no
likely prospects of finding an actor fitting that description who's also
capable of handling the role in our immediate region, that brings up the
question of "fat suits." My researches thus far (our costume designer,
textual, journal-wise and consulting other companies) have generally
centered around the use of foam rubber or polyester batting inside a
body suit to achieve the effect. However, our home theatre is an old,
historic building and the air conditioning is less than effective,
especially back stage. We are concerned for the well-being of our
actor. Have any members of the forum had experience with other
alternatives that are lighter, cooler, or at least breathe easier? The
actor we feel is the most likely candidate is very energetic and tends
to heat up and perspire quickly.

We appreciate any input.
