Subject: Seeking Enfants Terribles

If you are, or know, a genius in our field who is under 40, please let
me know.

I am organizing a symposium for spring 2005 of "the six most important
young scholars in the field of early modern English literature and
culture." I will pay to fly them here (from wherever in the world they
live) and wine and dine them for three days, and pay them an honorarium
to boot, and try to interest someone in publishing the six papers in a
collection. I know a few publishers.
Deadline for nominations is September 11, and invitations to the chosen
six horsepersons of the apocalypse will go out by the end of September.
Self-nominations are accepted. The more information you can give me
about the person-publications I should read, for instance- the better.
Nominations will be judged by me and my colleagues Sharon O'Dair and
Celia Daileader. If you are nominating someone else, their email address
would be helpful.

I was recently asked by the MacArthur Foundation to nominate people for
one of their "Genius" fellowships, and they made a point of saying that
they are interested in people still in their prime, and would appreciate
my including nominations for people under 40. Since I'm now a bedraggled
fifty-year-old, I realized that I probably didn't even KNOW the best
people under 40. This is my attempt to find them, and learn from them
where we are all headed.
