Subject: Google Scholar

Google has been introducing new services right and left, and today's is
called Google Scholar: http://scholar.google.com This is a specific
deep index of scholarly literature across many fields, including
peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical
reports. Some of the material will be free online, quite a lot is well
guarded within commercial walls.

Search results are, Google says, ranked by relevance, but single-word
test searches may not show off that capability as well as Google web
searches do. "Holinshed," for example, produced 122 results, the first
of which was:

[CITATION] Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland - Web Search
R Holinshed - Cited by 4
Appendix. The Tragedy of Master Arden of Faversham

--
If this is the most-linked-to, most-cited "Holinshed," I would suggest
cautious use of this new tool. A less simple search, "Holinshed 'James
IV'", for example, produced only five results, the top one being:

[PDF] Strategy and Its Limitations: The Anglo-Scots Wars, 1480-1550
G Phillips
.. By the same token successive Scottish rulers, James IV, the regent
Albany and James V, all led or instigated military operations in the
north of England. ...

As for its design and reception, go to--well, how about the Google News
index?
