Natalie Bennett's post ignores the clear dependence of the play for the
major elements of the plot on Arthur Brooke's verse translation, *Romeus
and Juliet*, published in 1562 and reissued in 1587, of an earlier
Italian novella. It remains possible, of course, that tavern and parlor
gossip about a current scandal contributed to a decision to rework the
old story into a new dramatic form in 1594 or '95.
