Dear Debra
A word of warning - beware of the Dream of Stratford before you get there!
Though the walk along the river can still be lovely in summer the town
itself is a nightmare of 1980s carparks, chain owned shops, tourists and
overpriced book stores. I like to imagine that England was never
destroyed by the English but alas they do have a habit of living there.
Read Schoenbaum and call up the good old days when we all died of plague
but the scenery was pastoral.
Best,
Marcus (Not Too Cynical) Dahl
PS: the Globe on the other hand is surprising good and you can bring
your own picnic hamper!

A walk between Salisbury and Stratford would be delightful.
It would pass through the region called the Cotswolds, the home of many
of England's most picturesque villages. There is no better way of seeing
the region than on foot.
There is a well maintained and generally well signposted network of
public footpaths which cover the area. The best set of maps for
exploring the countryside on foot are the Ordnance Survey "Outdoor
Leisure" and "Explorer" series (21/2 inches to the mile). These show the
footpath network in detail.
There are several different walking routes between Salisbury and
Stratford. One possible route would use a long-distance footpath called
"The Heart of England Way", which runs from Bourton on the Water, in the
heart of the Cotswolds, to Bidford-on-Avon. From Bidford, another named
footpath, the "Avon Valley Footpath", runs alongside the Avon, through
Welford-on-Avon, to Stratford.
North of Bidford (beyond your route), The Heart of England Way passes
close to Shakespeare Hall, the former home of a branch of the
Shakespeare family.
There is a softback walking guide called "The Heart of England Way" by
Richard Sale (ISBN 1854105388) with detailed maps and a few photos of
what to see along the route.
May is the best time to see Warwickshire because the trees are just
coming into leaf and exhibit a wide range of very vivid greens, just for
a few weeks at that time of year. The bluebells also flower, very
briefly, around the middle of May.
The one unpredictable element which could spoil your walk is the
weather. You would need to be prepared for the possibility of rain, and
possibly slightly muddy conditions underfoot if the weather should be
wet. Though generally footpaths are well maintained and weather proof.
The Heart of England Way has its own website, here:

Not if your hair is sufficiently dowdy. This will be England, after all.
