Subject: Only Outrageous Positions
Jerry Fodor, Rutgers philosopher, has an offhand comment of interest in
a TLS book review this week
Surveying the range of philosophical problems over the centuries, he
says that "all the plausible positions seem already to be occupied; to
say something new you have to say something outrageous. (I gather that
much the same is true in Shakespeare criticism: Prospero was senile,
Rosalind was queer, Goneril was a feminist--that sort of thing.)"
