I use the Riverside for close readings. When the second edition came out
I was concerned that it made changes which might have altered
conclusions I had already reached, so I wrote to Houghton Mifflin and
asked if there was some way I could access a list of textual changes,
and explaining the reason I asked. Instead of receiving a form response
from the publisher, I was delighted to receive a personally typed letter
from Gwynne Evans himself -- I know it was personally typed because no
secretary would have allowed a letter that looked like that one to see
the light of day. A brief but very amicable correspondence ensued. I
will always treasure Evans's kindness in taking the time to correspond
with a rank amateur.
By the way, the Riverside II makes only four minor textual changes, one
in a stage direction to list a character who is present in the scene.
Except for those changes, updated introductions to the textual notes and
the addition of Edward III and the Elegy, along with some updated
essays, the second edition uses the same plates as the first, without
even correcting obvious typos.
