Subject:      Newly Designed Web Site and Resumption of Service/Mailings

Dear SHAKSPEReans,

For many reasons, getting the newly designed web site functioning to my specifications has been more time-consuming than I/we had anticipated.

The new site has been designed in Joomla, an open-source content management system (CMS) and application framework.

At the new site, you will find many of your favorite portions of the old site with many improvements. In the process of getting the site ready I had to work with almost all of the content from the former site except for the archive of discussions. When you go to shaksper.net or www.shaskper.net, you will find this organizational structure: Home, About (General Information, Team, Advisory Board, Book Review Panel, Netiquette, How to Cite SHAKSPER), Scholarly Resources (Shakespeare on the Internet, Book Reviews, Roundtable Discussions, Scholarly Papers for Comment, Reference Files, Cook’s Tour, and Pedagogy), Archive, Current Postings, Announcements, and a link to PlayShakespeare.com.

I am learning how to use these apps and to adapt them to my style and the look-and-feel of the digests as they have been over the years to the Joomla tools. The biggest difference involves the new design, which will give me greater control and flexibility than the current one. I will now be able to use formatting options like italics and bold, so please adjust your submissions accordingly. I will also be able to have control over all of the content on the site. So after I send out one of the SBReviews, for example, I will be able to mount a pdf version of that review directly to the web site. There are many other features that the new site will have, but on the whole what you will be as subscribers will see is a cleaner, more modern-looking site with easier to use features. The archive of the list’s twenty-two of service will still be available and will remain the important scholarly resource it is.

We owe thanks for this newly designed site to Ron Severdia. Ron is a Creative Director at kontent design in the San Francisco Bay Area and has directed interactive branding projects—from websites and brand identities to interactive campaigns—for clients such as HP, Verizon, Electronic Arts, Yahoo!, Visa, Walmart.com, and Apple. His prior experience includes stints as a Senior Designer and then Creative Director at Young & Rubicam, DDB, Glow, and Landor Associates. Fluent in several languages, he worked for seven years in Europe, where he won a Euro-Effie award for his creative work with Schweppes. He wrote Using Joomla (published in December 2009 by O'Reilly Media) and is on the Leadership Team of the Joomla Project.
Eric Luhrs has earned every SHAKSPEReans thanks for designing SHAKSPER's first web presence and for his unflagging technical assistance to all things SHAKSPEReans for many, many years. Eric will continue to assist me with technical matters.

Please continue to be patent as I stumble through the new procedures. We hope to have the majority of the site up and functioning within the next 24 hours.

As you use the new site, please inform me of any problems or suggestions you have about it.

Best wishes,
