Subject:    Re: SHAKSPER: Thomas Woodstock

Michael Egan tells us that

>1 Richard II is being given a public reading by the RSC in

>London12/20. The announcement reads as follows:

>Thomas of Woodstock is sometimes referred to as

>Richard II: Part One....

>Please note the final acknowledgment of the work’s true title

I have asked Dr. Egan several times to specify the reasons he says “Richard II Part One” is the play’s “true title.”  So far as I know, he created that “title.” His treatise asserts that the play is “untitled and  . . .  missing a front cover (and therefore title and author)” (M. Egan, The Tragedy of Richard II Part One, vol. I. p.4 [Edwin Mellen Press 2006]).  If that is false, I think it incumbent on him to correct the record and provide the source of his contention about the “true title.”
