Subject: Songs in Twelfth Night
The tune entitled "O Mistress Mine" in Morley's *Consort Lessons*
has nothing to do with the song in *Twelfth Night* beyond the title.
Apart from the difficulty of fitting the words to the tune, the same
tune is found in Paris, Bibl. Nat., MS Res. 1122, with a fuller
title "O mistris myne I must", indicating that it was intended for
different words.
I have written about another Twelfth Night song, "Farewell dear
heart", in *The Well Enchanting Skill...Essays in Honour of F.W.
Sternfeld*, ed. J. Caldwell et al. (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1990),
213-29.
The latest work on Shakespeare and Music is the enormous
*A Shakespeare Music Catalogue* by Bryan Gooch and David
Thatcher, 5 vols (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1991).
