I believe such a reversal was produced in Washington earlier this
decade. Can anyone verify and provide information.

Yes, Patrick Stewart starred in Michael Kahn's Washington, D.C.
production two years ago at the Shakespeare Theatre at the Lansburgh.
He was the only white cast member within an all-black cast. Check out
their extremely informative site at www.shakespearedc.org.

Jude Kelley did an interesting "photo-negative" production at the
Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. during their 1997-98 season (as
I remember), with Patrick Stewart in the title role. James Loehlin
presented an outstanding seminar paper on the production at the 1998 SAA
meeting. He would be worth contacting regarding that production and its
significance.

Patrick Stewart appeared in a production such as you describe back in
1997. The production was in Washington, DC, and is reviewed in the New
York Times. If you are registered with the NYTimes (registration is free
for certain articles), you can see the review at:

Dear A.L.:

In 1997-98 (Nov. 11-Jan. 4), The Shakespeare Theatre at the Lansburgh in
Washington, DC, mounted an Othello that featured Patrick Stewart as the
protagonist and an otherwise almost entirely African-American cast. See
Shakespeare Bulletin 16.2 (Spring 1998): 9-13 for Miranda
Johnson-Haddad's review, an interview with Stewart on playing Othello,
and some commentary by Homer Swander (also production photos).

Yours--Jim Lusardi, Co-Editor, SB

The production done in Washington, DC a few years ago had Patrick
Stewart as a white Othello in a (mostly?) black cast.

I think Patrick Stewart as O. not long ago in Shakespeare in the Park in
NYC most recently. JE
