I can see it now, Shakespeare, the historical one as opposed to the
goofy character in the film, demanding that the play not go on due to
the unavailability of a specified breed of dog. In that sense, the film
may have been truer to the reality.

It's been a while since I read A. S. Byatt's Possession, but as I
recall, isn't it only one dog they have, called Trey? But one of the
two women is called Blanch, so we assume the other is her sweetheart...
and we infer what Antonia wants us to infer about their relationship.
