Subject: Up in the Gods

Biggles (and possibly Bertie Wooster) were constantly exclaiming "By
Jove!". The former also had occasional "Ye gods!". These usages probably
had little to do with 17th century constraining legislation and a lot to
do with dramatic situation and character portrayal.

It is likely, is it not, that Shakespeare was taking a similar route
trodden subsequently by W E Johns and P G Woodhouse?
