In my experience (tutored by a dear friend and Plato scholar), in the
end Plato turns out to have said everything first. However, speaking
more locally, a 1973 example of the "turtles all the way down" story
appears in Clifford Geertz's The Interpretation of Cultures, in the
famous essay on "Thick Description" (28-29). Geertz says he first heard
the story as an Indian story.
